Cardinal & Cream

As storytellers perfecting our craft, Cardinal & Cream seeks to honor, move and inform our community by creating narratives that encourage thoughtful conversation, advocate for positive change and build lasting connections.

Cardinal & Cream is the student publication of Union University. It produces a biannual print magazine and runs a daily online magazine. Articles are written, edited, and published by students under the guidance of a faculty adviser. Staff scholarships are awarded to students who show promise in the fields of journalism, photography, and design. Students enrolled in COM 210: Journalism Practicum are given the opportunity to write news, features, sports, arts & entertainment articles for Cardinal & Cream’s website as well as podcast and video content.

Cardinal & Cream has been named the Best Magazine of the South by the Southeast Journalism Conference in 2015, 2018, 2021, and 2022 and has ranked in the category every year since 2015. Union students have won and ranked in individual awards for feature writing, news writing, arts and entertainment writing, sports writing, magazine writing, magazine design, and photography.

Cardinal & Cream won first place in the Baptist Communicators Association’s Wilmer C. Fields Student Awards competition in 2022 and 2023. It has placed in the top three overall magazines every year since 2017. Union students have won individual awards in news writing, feature writing, design, photography, and audio-visual communication.

The latest edition of Cardinal & Cream’s magazine is available for free in the red newsracks on the Jackson campus. A digital edition of the magazine is posted to the Cardinal & Cream website.
